Instead of using overused historical landmarks as backdrops, consider these photo shoot locations in LA that provide plenty of room for creativity.

Photographers in Los Angeles looking for photo shoot venues other than the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Union Station and City Hall will find a higher potential for unique shots at the following places.

Photo Shoot Locations in Los Angeles

  1. Olvera Street is a historic strip in downtown LA located across from the Union Station. A mini version of Mexico, it is colorful and full of culture. Vendors and eateries dot the small area where one can find clothes, sombrero hats, tchotchkes, churros, mariachi singers and the whole bit. Bright doors and adobe buildings create some amazing backdrops for professional pictures. 845 N. Alameda St., Los Angeles, CA 90012
  2. Inside the grounds of Chinatown is a classic venue for taking pictures since it is rich in culture, color and architecture. Rush Hour starring Jackie Chan was filmed here. 727 N. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90012
  3. Los Angeles Arts District is in the midst of going through an urban renewal after being gentrified, but there are many interesting sceneries to take advantage of before further revamping takes place. Scout out the area for artsy graffiti, colorful walls with random wild plants growing in nooks and crannies and other gritty spots that are hidden gems. Used to be known as the Warehouse District, the Arts District is located between Alameda, First, Violet streets and the Los Angeles River.
  4. Barnsdall Art Park is home to the Independent Shakespeare company every summer and a center for developing the arts. Several of the buildings on the park are designed by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The park is filled with nature, hills, stairs and great views of Los Angeles. 4800 Hollywood Blvd., LA, CA 90027
  5. Metro stations provide interesting backdrops for photo shoots since each is distinct with different designs and murals. The North Hollywood station located on Lankershim Boulevard and Chandler Boulevard is a colorful option. Shoot during off-peak hours.
  6. The Standard Hotel Rooftop Bar creates a wonderful backdrop for portraits—hip and trendy with a pool and beautiful views of the city’s skyline. Getting access and permission for a professional photo shoot may take some effort, but it may be worth it. 550 S. Flower St., LA, CA 90071
  7. Viceroy Hotel Santa Monica is an ideal setting for indoor photo shoots. Stylish interior with chic design, the hotel is a luxurious urban retreat spot and located right next the beach. 1819 Ocean Ave., Santa Monica, CA 90401

Before going to these photo shoot locations in Los Angeles, remember to take care of any red tape beforehand to prevent running into permit issues. It’s also a good idea to visit and scout out the venue in advance to make a mental note of how to construct and compose each shot.
